V fingers

fingers are not so easy as they need fine tuning. Be prepared to do and redo some times.

Also it is much better to model each finger individually, rather than doing one and copying it.
When you get the technic, it is quite fast to do.

Fingers are not round at all, so the placement of each vertex is very important in this case.
All pinchs or sizes are symetric and axis aligned. Dont expect absolute rules here, this is how i do, but you can find better ways.

First make sure your fingers base tubes are symetrical.

Cut some loops at 50%. hands-053.jpg
Pinch shown edges a little. hands-054.jpg
Bulge lower part. hands-055.jpg
size up (around 1.05) and lower a bit. hands-056.jpg
Size down and realign. hands-057.jpg
Size down again. hands-058.jpg
Lower those faces hands-059.jpg
Flatten by lowering this edge. hands-060.jpg
Size down the tip hands-061.jpg
raise tip to realign. hands-062.jpg
Subsurfed result so far. Keep tweaking till you get satisfying results on the shape.
Need to mark joints to get a nice looking finger.
hands-063.jpg
Cut a loop around 10% on each sides of joints. merge 3 vertexs on each sides, quadify. hands-064.jpg
Select median vertex and move them to mark the joint. hands-065.jpg
Subsurfed result. The marked fold nicely define the shape. It is possible to do more complex folds which add to realism, just repeat same procedure hands-066.jpg
Cut a knife loop as marked. hands-067.jpg
Move selected edges on the sides. hands-068.jpg
Delete highlighted vertex. hands-069.jpg
Extrude in bottom direction. hands-070.jpg
Invert the 3 front vertexs as shown. hands-071.jpg
you can now extrude the nail. Reshape as shown.

note: the following method apply for short nails. For very long ones, you will need more vertex.
hands-072.jpg
Cut 2 new vertexs, reshape, quadify. hands-073.jpg
Fill new faces. hands-074.jpg
Subsurfed result. quite nice, but nail root is too soft and it is too flat. hands-075.jpg
For the first problem, a loopcut will solve it. hands-076.jpg
raising the selected edges will solve the 2nd. hands-077.jpg
One tip shape. Various solution are possible here. hands-078.jpg
Quadified result. hands-079.jpg
Finished finger. light but acurate. hands-080.jpg
The whole hand. You will have to spread the fingers a bit when all is finished.

Features are are bit exagerared too, so they are shown clearly. You will want to soft things a bit. But this is also part of my method. do more and smooth later. The nice topology make this easy.
